Don't you need to enable some hardware acceleration to use the GPU instead of the CPU while compiling vdr on the RPi?
Xbian is capable of decoding 1080p .mkv so I guess that decoding HD channels should work too. Normally on the RPi H.264 is hardware decoding enabled by the GPU.
